As the seasons change it’s time to turn your thoughts to preparing the yard for fall and winter. Pool winterizing is a must and you should start by giving it a thorough clean. This will reduce the amount of work you will need to do next spring when preparing for a new season of swimming and increased outdoor activity. Next you will need to make sure the chemical balance is the same as if you were maintaining it for the summer. Check that the various components are within the desired range and if they aren’t, add the appropriate chemicals to bring them into line.

Once your pool is cleaned and chemically balanced you need to lower the water level to be about 4 to 6 inches below the skimmer. It’s worth taking all your filter equipment indoors as well, to prevent cracks due to the water trapped inside freezing. Finally, make sure your pool is well covered.

Another job that needs to be attended to at this time of year is checking your outdoor house lighting. It’s easy during the summer months to let this job slip. Make sure all the lights work properly and replace any bulbs that have blown. Clean glass globes with warm, soapy water and use soft cloths on any plastics to avoid scratching them and which will lead to a decrease in the amount of light getting through.
