Buying a cookware set can be confusing. What types of pans are out there and how do you decide what to buy? Let’s narrow the field: Copper pots conduct heat very well, last forever, look amazing, but are prohibitively expensive and time consuming to maintain. Cast iron conducts heat nearly as well as copper, but at a fraction of the cost. Seasoned cast iron keeps food from sticking and if it is enamel coated cast iron, it keeps food from reacting or from becoming discolored. Cast iron is heavy and it lasts nearly forever. Stainless steel is a neutral metal which means you do not need to worry about it reacting with food or pitting. It’s great for sauce pans, stock pots or skillets. You will need to heat the pans first and coat with a thin coating of oil to keep food from sticking. The bottom of a stainless steel pan should be heavy. Porcelain enamel coating makes for easy clean up. Aluminum is another popular material for cookware sets, but it needs to have been anodized to harden the metal and make it less reactive. Again, a heavy bottom is important.

Finally, one has to reconcile their needs and budget. Buy the best line of pots and pans one can afford and that will serve your needs. I have used and had good success with Rachael Ray’s 10 piece cookware set. She offers 3 colors of porcelain enamel coated stainless steel, so it appeals to one’s personality. The coating makes for easy clean up. It is ovenproof to 400 degrees, so you can make frittatas that go in the oven at the last minute or a skillet dish that needs to be browned. One Item not included in her set that I couldn’t resist was the cast iron griddle/grill with handles. It’s perfect. I love that you can cook bacon on one side and pancakes on the other. It’s oven proof to 500 degrees too! I find it useful for grilling meat indoors and the cast iron is undeniably durable. I think you will find the price point is fair and reasonable. I hope I have shed some light on this broad subject, so the next time you are looking for a cookware set for yourself or as a gift for someone else you will have the field narrowed.

There are some feelings that are so strong that they can’t be properly conveyed with words alone, so why not let gifts do the talking for you? Gifts have the power to communicate a variety of sentiments like “Thank You,” “Happy Day of Birth,” “Thinking of You,” and many more. While a card can say the same thing, sometimes it just doesn’t seem like enough to give your family and friends a piece of paper to say that you care for them. Sometimes you just have to think bigger. Let cookie bouquets take care of that.

If you know of someone in the hospital, they will probably receive a lot of cards and stuffed animals. Make your gift stand out from the rest of the traditional presents. Surely your friend will remember the cookie bouquets and gift baskets with all of the cookies and goodies in it more than the cards and stuffed animals. Besides, your friend will want to eat something to cancel out the taste of bland hospital food, and cookies are just the thing to do that. Once all of the cookies are all gone, your friend can even use the gift baskets to carry all the other gifts home in. It’ll be like a whole new gift.

I’ve noticed that many of the restaurants in our area are using a lot of white plates and bowls for their tableware lately. Personally, I love the look. I think it manages to look so clean and yet very elegant in a simple way. Of course, the white always contrasts nicely against any table cloth or backdrop too. I also like the look of square plates instead of the typical round ones, which is probably why I like this Corelle Pure White 16 Piece Dinnerware Set so much!

This attractive service for four has four large dinner plates, four side or salad plates, four soup or cereal bowls and four twelve-ounce drinking mugs. This white dinnerware set is a perfect starter set for someone moving into their first place. It’s also just the right size and style for someone downsizing to a smaller place or retirement living facility. Corelle dinnerware is known for its durability and versatility. This timeless set is safe for the microwave as well as the fridge and the dishwasher. It even comes with a three year manufacturer’s breakage warranty for those of us who tend to break things too often!

It seems cupcakes are not just for kids anymore! Cupcakes have gained quite a bit of popularity with adults and as a result, many specialty bakeries now offer an array of wonderful, fancy cupcakes made especially for grown-up events. But why pay high bakery prices when you can create delicious, fun cupcakes for a whole lot less right in your own kitchen. To start, you’ll want to be sure you have the essential tools on-hand for baking them, including a quality 12 muffin pan or two.

There are many great recipes you can find online to create your own one-of-a-kind cupcakes for your special occasion. Maybe you want cream filled, or meringue topping – and you’ll find countless ways to color and decorate your dessert for the perfect finishing touch – it’s limited only by your imagination! And let’s not forget that you can also make fresh breakfast muffins in your muffin pan too, like warm banana walnut, carrot morning glory, bran, and much more. You might even decide to turn your kitchen into your own private bakery by keeping a handy supply baking pans and sheets in your kitchenware collection.

Since we’re getting close to the presidential election, I thought I’d share my favorite political dish with you. It’s called congressional bean soup and from what I’ve read, this delicious soup (in one variation or another) has been served every single day that congress is in session since the early 20th century. We’re talking well over 100 years of bean soup eating tradition here. So it has to be pretty good, don’t you think? It sure is, in fact it is my husband’s favorite soup by a long shot.

I don’t even bother with any other bean soup recipes anymore. Anytime I try, my family simply states that it’s not nearly as good as the congressional bean soup I usually make. So I’ve given up trying other recipes and just put on a pot of this one every other week or so. After all, we’re not as crazy as congress and serve it every single day. Just kidding, I’m sure they offer plenty of other choices at the various restaurants or cafeterias up there. I think I’ll take the kids up there this coming spring and try the original soup up there. We’ll see if it’s as good as my version.
